Giovanni Malagò has moved a significant step closer to assuming the role of the new FIGC President. His candidacy has received endorsements from both the Coaches’ Association and the Players’ Association, solidifying his position ahead of the upcoming election.
Following Gabriele Gravina’s resignation, an election is scheduled for June 22nd to determine the successor as the head of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). After the Lega Serie A previously declared its support for Malagò, both the Italian Players’ Association (AIC) and the Italian Association of Coaches (AIAC) have now officially backed the same candidate.
Malagò Positions Himself for FIGC Leadership
“The players and coaches have articulated a unified vision, identifying Giovanni Malagò as the individual best equipped to address the numerous challenges of the present and, crucially, the future,” stated a message released to the ANSA news agency. “In recent weeks, discussions have revealed significant common ground on key programmatic points, including Club Italia, sustainability and reforms, women’s football, and a comprehensive vision for sport. This builds upon the initial impetus presented by the Lega Serie A, offering assurance for the crucial path forward during this important season.”
The race for the FIGC presidency appears to be primarily between Malagò and Giancarlo Abete, with Malagò now commanding approximately 47 percent of the voting bloc.
The voting structure for the FIGC elections is as follows: Serie A holds 18 percent of the vote, Serie B 6 percent, Lega Pro 12 percent, the amateur league LND 34 percent, the Players’ Association 20 percent, and the Coaches’ Association 10 percent.
Malagò previously served as the President of CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) and most recently oversaw the organization of the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympic Games.
