Giovanni Malagò, despite securing the backing of the Lega Serie A, Players’ Association, and Coaches’ Association, has stated that he will reach a final decision regarding his candidacy for the FIGC Presidency “by the end of next week.”
Following Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Gabriele Gravina submitted his resignation as President of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). This has led to an election scheduled for June 22 to appoint his successor.
The election appears to be a contest between Malagò and Giancarlo Abete. Malagò has publicly garnered support from the Lega Serie A, and more recently, from the Players’ Association (AIC) and the Coaches’ Association (AIAC).
However, Malagò, formerly the head of CONI (Italian Olympic Committee), has yet to officially confirm his participation in the election.
Malagò Remains Undecided on FIGC Role
Expressing his thoughts to the ANSA news agency, Malagò commented, “I am very pleased to see the positions of the players and coaches. I thank them for the faith shown in me, which adds further responsibility in evaluating my candidacy, so I intend to make a final decision by the end of next week, with respect for the Serie B and C assemblies.”
The voting weight in this election is distributed among various entities: Lega Serie A holds 18% of the vote, Serie B 6%, Lega Pro 12%, the amateur league LND 34%, the Players Association 20%, and the Coaches Association 10%.
With the support of the Lega Serie A, Players’ Association, and Coaches’ Association, Malagò has secured 47% of the vote. Meanwhile, Giancarlo Abete, as the current President of the LND, already has the backing of their 34% of the vote.
