Diana Bianchedi Resigns as Italy Delegation Chief Amidst Controversy

Diana Bianchedi has resigned from her role as FIGC delegation chief for the Italy national team. This departure comes during a Nations League campaign and just two months after her appointment stirred debate.

Her resignation adds to the ongoing turmoil within the Federation, partly stemming from complex regulations governing Italian sports sectors. With FIGC President Giovanni Malagò facing potential nullification of his June election, Bianchedi has chosen to leave the position she was appointed to on August 9.

Bianchedi's position was deemed incompatible with her existing role as vice president of CONI (Italian Olympic Committee). This created a perceived conflict of interest. Further issues arose from her disagreement with CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio regarding the management of a special commissioner for the weightlifting federation.

Bianchedi Steps Down from Italy Role

Bianchedi, an Olympic fencing champion, issued a statement: "Following Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi's remarks and the media controversy this afternoon, I tender my resignation as delegation chief for the Nazionale."

"This decision stems from my deep respect for CONI, its committee, the FIGC, and sporting institutions, as demonstrated throughout my career as an athlete and director," the statement continued. "I have always acted with integrity and professionalism, adhering to rules and respecting individuals for the benefit of sport – values now unjustly questioned. I also choose to step back to shield the Azzurri from unnecessary controversy."

"The squad is unified, motivated, and comprises excellent professionals, from the coach to the players and staff. I thank them for their welcome and the emotions they shared with me, despite the brief period. Let's remember that sport is fundamentally about this. Let's support these athletes; they deserve it."

Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi had commented on Bianchedi and fellow CONI vice president Marco Di Paola, stating their differing opinions from CONI President Buonfiglio on the weightlifting federation situation. "Vice presidents have the right and obligation to voice their views, but persistent opposition may require them to make a choice," Abodi said. "Their roles were granted based on trust. It is concerning that two prominent figures, entrusted with leadership positions based on confidence, cannot consistently demonstrate that faith. These are internal decisions, but such relationships typically do not endure."
