Mancini: Italy Won Euros Without Star Names
Roberto Mancini stated that in 2018, "nobody would’ve bet a penny" on Italy winning the Euros. He emphasized their 2021 victory was achieved "without a Totti, a Del Piero, a Baggio, or a Riva," proving that team play is sufficient for success.
The Azzurri are set to face Turkiye in their Nations League campaign. Mancini, currently facing scrutiny after a recent loss, remains focused on the team's collective strength.
"I don’t read the newspapers and I am not interested in social media," he told Radio RAI. "The truth is that nobody would’ve bet a penny on us in 2018, then we won the European Championship in 2021. We managed that despite not having any phenomenal players in the squad. You can win just by playing as a team."
He referenced past Italian football legends like Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero, who were part of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad, and Roberto Baggio, who led the team to the 1994 World Cup Final. Gigi Riva was instrumental in Italy’s 1968 European Championship win, the nation's sole triumph in the tournament until 2021.
