The leadership of Italian sports bodies faces potential upheaval. Sources indicate CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio's role is threatened should his effort to remove FIGC President Giovanni Malagò fail.
Malagò, who took the helm of the Italian FA in June after Gabriele Gravina's resignation, may face stepping down within four months. This stems from questions about his eligibility for the Presidency, as he was not a registered FIGC member at the time of his election, despite previously leading CONI (the Italian Olympic Committee).
Current CONI President Buonfiglio has acknowledged Malagò's ineligibility. A CONI board meeting is scheduled for October 7 to address the issue.
If Malagò is removed, the FIGC will be placed under special administration until new elections, likely in late 2026 or early 2027. Malagò could seek re-election, but the process now appears more challenging.
However, reports suggest the consequences could extend beyond Malagò. La Gazzetta dello Sport indicates that if Buonfiglio fails to unseat Malagò, Buonfiglio's own position as CONI President would likely become unsustainable.
