David Makes History with Canada Hat-trick at World Cup, but Koné Suffers Serious Injury

Juventus forward Jonathan David has etched his name in Canadian football history by scoring the country’s first-ever World Cup hat-trick. This remarkable achievement came during Canada’s decisive 6-0 win against Qatar in their second group stage match of the 2026 World Cup. However, the celebratory mood was somewhat dampened by a serious injury sustained by Sassuolo midfielder Ismael Koné.

David was the standout performer, netting three goals to become the first Canadian player to achieve such a feat on the World Cup stage. The comprehensive victory over Qatar marked a significant moment for the Canadian team.

Unfortunately, the match also saw a concerning incident for Sassuolo’s Koné, who suffered a broken leg just eight minutes into the second half, with Canada already holding a comfortable 3-0 lead. The injury occurred following a reckless challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo, which initially resulted in a yellow card but was later upgraded to a red after a VAR review.

Canada’s head coach, Jesse Marsch, spoke about Koné’s impact and the team’s concern: “Ismael is such a great kid – he’s so imperfect, but that’s part of why you love him. Because he can do great things that nobody else can do, then the next moment he loses concentration. He embodies us as a team, it’s a huge loss for us. He’ll be fine; we’ll get him good doctors and get him back, but that kid is a big part of our future and everything we do.”

Both David and Koné recently concluded their debut seasons in Serie A. David scored eight goals in 46 appearances for Juventus across all competitions, while Koné found the net six times in 36 matches for Sassuolo.

With his hat-trick, David has climbed to the top of the World Cup’s goal-scoring chart. Despite reports suggesting Juventus may be open to offers for the Canadian international this summer, David is reportedly keen to remain at the club and compete for a starting position in the 2026-27 season.
