Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij is reportedly on the brink of joining Greek club Panathinaikos as a free agent, indicating he will not be extending his contract with the Italian giants.
The 34-year-old Netherlands international has been a key figure at the San Siro since his arrival in the summer of 2018. Coincidentally, he also joined Inter on a free transfer from Lazio back then, with his previous contract having expired.
Although there had been lingering hopes of a contract extension with the Nerazzurri, it now appears his chapter in Italian football is drawing to a close.
According to renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, personal terms have been successfully negotiated with Panathinaikos, and the club is awaiting the final confirmation from the Dutch defender.
De Vrij has enjoyed a distinguished career in Serie A. He initially moved to Lazio from Feyenoord for a reported €7 million in the summer of 2014.
Throughout his Serie A career, De Vrij has amassed 308 appearances, contributing 20 goals and seven assists.
His trophy cabinet includes three Serie A titles with Inter Milan, along with three Coppa Italia triumphs and three Italian Supercups. He also secured the Supercoppa Italiana with Lazio in the 2017-18 season.
