Rafael Leao has indicated that the appointment of Ruben Amorim as AC Milan’s new coach might influence his decision to leave the club. Following a goal for Portugal, Leao stated, “He is a very good coach, I will make a decision after the World Cup.”
Leao has had limited impact in the current World Cup campaign, not starting in the opening match against DR Congo and playing only a part in the 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan. However, he did contribute to the scoreline in the latter match with a powerful first-time strike.
Speaking to DAZN Italia after the game, Leao addressed his current situation, acknowledging a seemingly strained relationship with Milan.
Rafael Leao Open to Staying at Amorim’s Milan
“I need to celebrate this with my family, as it’s been a tough season for me,” Leao shared. “I faced injuries and other issues, coupled with how Milan’s season unfolded. I’m grateful to my family for their support, and this goal is dedicated to them.”
“I’ve put in a lot of work with my personal trainer and teammates. I also want to thank the coach for believing in me, especially considering the depth of talent in the Portuguese squad. I’m very happy to be here.”
Addressing criticism regarding his perceived lack of defensive contribution, Leao responded, “I have to do this for myself, not for anyone else. I work for myself, my teammates, and my coach. I’m pleased I could help my team and get minutes on the pitch, which was important.”
When questioned about his future, particularly after suggesting his time at Milan might be nearing its end at the close of the season, Leao’s perspective appears to have shifted with the arrival of Amorim, replacing Max Allegri.
“At this moment, I need to stay focused on the World Cup. I know he is a very good coach. He did well in Portugal, though it didn’t work out as he’d hoped at Manchester United, but he remains a great coach.”
“I will make a decision after the World Cup.”
It was widely known that Leao had disagreements with Allegri, particularly regarding his deployment as a centre-forward and subsequent early substitutions. The potential impact of Amorim’s arrival on Leao’s future at Milan is now a key talking point.
