Cameron Young Triumphs at The Players Championship with Dramatic Finish

With only two holes remaining in The Players Championship, Cameron Young found himself one stroke behind Matt Fitzpatrick. However, Young delivered two masterful shots to ultimately claim victory in the prestigious tournament.

On the notoriously challenging par-3 17th at TPC Sawgrass, Young executed a precise sand wedge shot, landing the ball within ten feet of the pin on the island green. He then sank the birdie putt, drawing level with Fitzpatrick, who had managed a two-putt par from 29 feet.

Young then proceeded to make tournament history on the 18th hole, unleashing a phenomenal 375-yard draw – the longest tee shot ever recorded at The Players Championship – leaving him with a mere 98 yards to the flag. In contrast, Fitzpatrick's drive sailed through the fairway into the pine straw, forcing him to chip out short of the green.

Young subsequently placed his wedge shot 15 feet from the pin. Fitzpatrick responded with a chip to eight feet. Young's birdie putt finished just eight inches shy of the hole. When Fitzpatrick failed to convert his par putt, Young easily tapped in, securing a remarkably clutch victory.

“My dominant thought on the 18th tee was that I needed to hit the best shot of my life right then," shared the 28-year-old Young, who claimed $4.5 million for his second professional win. "I genuinely can't recall a better shot.”

He added, "It's a daunting tee shot, so to execute it perfectly in that high-pressure situation feels incredibly satisfying.”

This exceptional tee shot was made even more remarkable by the fact that on Saturday, Young had driven his ball into the water on the very same 18th hole, leading to a double bogey.

Young's Consistent Performance

Young posted impressive rounds of 68, 67, 72, and 68, culminating in a 13-under-par total for the tournament. Fitzpatrick's final round of 68 secured him solo second place at 12 under. Xander Schauffele finished third, one stroke behind, while Robert MacIntyre claimed fourth at 10 under.

Young revealed that he didn't experience nerves until he faced the tournament's very last putt.

“Everything was fine until I had to sink that eight-inch putt on the final hole; I almost completely lost it," Young admitted. "From that short distance, the hole appeared incredibly small. I struggled to even align my putter towards it, but I hit it regardless – perhaps I shouldn't have. Still, it went in, so it all worked out.”

Fitzpatrick had anticipated his 18th-hole tee shot would mirror Young's drawing trajectory. Instead, his ball veered right into the trees, eliminating any possibility of reaching the green with his second shot.

“I believed I hit a good shot, perhaps pushing it a little," Fitzpatrick commented on his tee shot. "I'm aware Cam hits a draw, and his ball moved slightly, so I expected mine to do likewise. However, it flew perfectly straight. Once you're off-line like that, making par becomes a significant challenge.”

Aberg's Lead Dissipates with Water Hazards

Ludvig Aberg held the tournament lead following the second and third rounds, commencing the final day with a three-stroke advantage over Michael Thorbjornsen and a four-stroke lead over Young.

After an even-par front nine (36), Aberg's second shot on the par-5 11th hole, a 7-wood from 267 yards, landed in the water short and right of the green, leading to a bogey.

The very next hole saw Aberg hit his tee shot left into the water. This double bogey on the par-4 12th cost him the lead. He finished the round with a 4-over 76, ultimately tying for fifth place at 9 under par.

“Things unraveled quickly for me on holes 11 and 12," Aberg reflected. "They were simply poor swings. I'd been battling that specific 7-wood miss to the right a few times this week. Then, on the 12th, I tried to push it a bit, opting for a driver where a 3-wood might have been a safer choice. Naturally, I'm extremely disappointed.”

Schauffele's Solid Conclusion

Schauffele concluded his round with a strong finish, carding birdies on three of his last four holes, including a 20.5-foot birdie putt on the 18th, for a final score of 69.

Both Young and Aberg had demonstrated strong form the previous week, sharing a tie for third place at 12 under at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, marking their first top-5 finishes of the season.

In his second appearance of the 2026 season following back surgery in November 2021, former Players champion Justin Thomas secured a tie for eighth place, marking his first top-10 finish since placing seventh in the 2025 Tour Championship.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who uniquely claimed back-to-back Players titles in 2023 and 2024, finished tied for 22nd at 5 under par. This extended his remarkable streak to 27 consecutive top-25 finishes, a feat second only to Tiger Woods' 38 straight top-25s since 1983.

The Florida Swing circuit is set to conclude with the Valspar Championship, hosted at the Copperhead Course of the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor. Viktor Hovland is the reigning champion. Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas are also confirmed to play, alongside Arnold Palmer Invitational champion Akshay Bhatia.
