Modric Reveals Milan's Biggest Misstep in Disappointing 2025-26 Season
Luka Modric has voiced his disappointment regarding Milan's failure to secure Champions League qualification in the closing weeks of the 2025-26 season. The veteran midfielder believes that had he not suffered a cheekbone fracture, he might have been able to help the team achieve their goal. He also shared his perspective on what he considers the team's most significant error during their late-season slump.
Despite the absence of Champions League football for the upcoming season, Modric recently committed to a one-year contract extension with Milan.
The Rossoneri concluded the 2025-26 campaign in fifth place, a stark contrast to their earlier form where they spent a considerable portion of the season in second, even contending with eventual champions Inter Milan for the Scudetto.
However, Modric expressed his delight at returning to San Siro for another season, even with the team's disappointing finish.
“I am very happy to be back; I had a great time last year,” stated the former Ballon d'Or winner in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Unfortunately, our finish was not strong, and we failed to reach our minimum objective, which was Champions League qualification. That is quite frustrating.
“I was disappointed not to be able to help the team in the most crucial games at the end of the season due to an injury. That's why I wanted to come back, and I hope to have a better season and win with Milan.”
Some speculated that Modric’s decision to extend his stay was influenced by a desire not to end his career on a "negative" note, following Milan's disappointing 2025-26 season and a somewhat underwhelming performance with Croatia in the World Cup.
“No, I am here because I had a fantastic experience. The club and the fans showed me immense affection, and that is the primary reason I chose to stay,” Modric asserted. “The club has also demonstrated a strong desire to have me here, which is very pleasing. I still possess the same passion and drive as always, and I intend to continue playing football and enjoying the game. This is the best place for me, and I hope to contribute to Milan as much as I did last year and have a better collective season, certainly with a better ending.”
Where did Milan's 2025-26 Season Unravel?
Modric suggested that Milan became complacent towards the end of the 2025-26 season, believing that Champions League qualification was already secured. He identified this as the season's most significant mistake.
“The only way to move forward is to learn from our mistakes: We were in a strong position until that game against Lazio, competing for the title. Then, we realized winning the league would be difficult and perhaps relaxed a bit, possibly feeling confident that we had already secured a Champions League spot. We made an error.”
Modric was also asked about the timing of his decision to extend his contract with Milan for another year.
He replied: “I had always known in my mind that I wanted to continue for another year. I could have signed the contract as early as December, but I didn't want to. I needed to listen to my body and understand how I was feeling and if I still had the passion to keep playing.
“That was the most important thing, and in the end, the answers were what I expected: I still feel good, I have that passion, and everything else I need to continue. When I saw that the management still wanted me here, I had no other doubts.
“What Milan showed me last year, during the World Cup and after it concluded, is everything a footballer desires: trust and affection.”
