Why Suzuki's Move to PSG Collapsed: Aston Villa Eyes €35m Deal

Reports suggest that the transfer of Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to Paris Saint-Germain was scuttled by a last-minute, exorbitant demand from his representatives. This unexpected development has paved the way for Aston Villa, who are reportedly prepared to meet the €35 million valuation.

The transfer process was at an advanced stage, with paperwork being exchanged and medical examinations scheduled, when PSG abruptly withdrew from negotiations, indicating no intention to re-engage in talks.

According to L'Equipe, the breakdown occurred because Suzuki's entourage presented a new request for up to €5 million in commission just before the deal was finalized. This late stipulation was perceived as a form of "blackmail" by the agents.

Suzuki Transfer Hits Final Hurdle

The initial agreement with Parma was reportedly valued at €30 million, with an additional €5 million possible through add-ons. However, the eleventh-hour commission demand was seen as a significant impediment.

Furthermore, there are indications that such a demand might be legally questionable, as French regulations cap agent commissions and signing bonuses at a maximum of 10% of the player's salary, a limit this request would have likely exceeded.

RMC Sport pundit Loic Tanzi has offered a more critical perspective, suggesting that PSG believes the commission issue was used as a pretext to halt the move and facilitate a transfer to Aston Villa instead.

This theory is supported by the fact that while Suzuki might not have been a guaranteed starter at PSG, he was reportedly close to joining Juventus on loan and would likely secure regular playing time in the Premier League with Aston Villa.

Parma, on the other hand, stands to benefit financially, with a €35 million package in place regardless of the buyer, meaning this situation may simply represent a temporary delay for them.
