Spence Joins Inter, Citing Club History and Risk-Taking Style

Djed Spence revealed that the allure of Inter Milan's illustrious history and extensive trophy cabinet was a significant factor in his decision to join the club, describing it as a "massive club." The versatile full-back, who has departed Tottenham Hotspur, also highlighted his preference for taking calculated risks during matches.

Spence arrived on Thursday evening and successfully completed his medical examinations on Friday, with the transfer officially confirmed today.

The deal is reportedly valued at €35 million, including potential add-ons, with Tottenham Hotspur set to receive 10 percent of any future transfer fee.

Spence has committed to a contract at San Siro that runs until June 2031, marking his return to Serie A after a brief loan spell at Genoa in 2024.

Spence Admires Inter's Rich History

"This is a huge Club and a big step for me and my family," Spence stated to the official club website. "I’m over the moon to be here and I’m ready to get started. I was definitely drawn by the history. You only have to look behind us at all those trophies. This really is a massive Club."

Inter Milan further bolstered their trophy count last season, securing both the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia to achieve a domestic double.

Remarkably for an England international, Spence has already experienced football in England, France, and Italy during his career. "They’ve shaped me a lot," he commented. "You learn so much when you play abroad. I can say I became a man when I was abroad and I’m grateful for those experiences."

Having previously played at Genoa, Spence is familiar with the atmosphere of the San Siro stadium. "I remember it being a great time," he recalled. "So many legends have played there. It was a special experience, and now I’m happy to be coming back as an Inter player."

Referencing a notable goal-line clearance he made against Giuliano Simeone of Argentina in a World Cup semi-final, Spence assured fans, "I am the kind of player who likes to take risks, and that’s exactly what you’ll see from me at Inter."

Spence is seen as the successor to Denzel Dumfries, who has transferred to Real Madrid. His versatility, with the ability to play on the left flank, is a key asset, and he is considered a more defensively sound player than Dumfries.

"My defensive ability is my biggest strength, along with my ball-carrying," Spence explained. "I’d like to add more goals and assists to my game. If I can do that, I’ll be in a very, very good place."
