Fenerbahce 1-1 Roma: A Hard-Fought Draw in Istanbul

Roma kicked off their Champions League journey with a commendable 1-1 away draw against Fenerbahce. Bryan Cristante's early goal was eventually canceled out by Archie Brown's equalizer.

The Giallorossi made their return to the prestigious tournament after a seven-year absence, entering the match on the back of three consecutive Serie A victories. Lorenzo Pellegrini remained sidelined, while Devyne Rensch, Donyell Malen, Paulo Dybala, and Matias Soulé were available for selection.

Fenerbahce, appearing in the Champions League proper for the first time in 18 years, faced disruptions. Matteo Guendouzi was suspended following an incident during their playoff against Lyon. Jayden Oosterwolde and Marco Asensio were injured. The squad featured former Serie A players like Milan Skriniar, Romelu Lukaku, and Mert Muldur, alongside Mason Greenwood, who opted for the Turkish club over Roma earlier in the summer.

The match saw early dominance from the Italian side in terms of possession. However, it was Fenerbahce who first tested Mile Svilar's reflexes with a counter-attack from Kerem Akturkoglu. Paulo Dybala also forced a save from Ederson at the near post.

Despite a decisive tackle by Ismael Yuksek on Donyell Malen within the penalty area, Roma found the breakthrough. Malen, cutting in from the left, laid the ball off to Bryan Cristante, who drilled a right-footed shot through a crowd of legs into the far bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Roma could have extended their lead shortly after, but Wesley missed a chance from 12 yards out from a Paulo Dybala cross.

Fenerbahce managed to equalize at the beginning of the second half. Archie Brown successfully beat the offside trap from a cleverly disguised pass by Mason Greenwood, and delicately chipped the ball over the onrushing Svilar.

The Turkish side pushed for a second goal soon after, with Svilar once again making a crucial save to deny Muriqi, who was played in by a N’Golo Kanté pass.

Paulo Dybala had penalty appeals turned down for a shirt tug by Milan Skriniar. Mason Greenwood hit the side-netting after evading Wesley, and Donyell Malen fired over from a difficult angle following an assist from Matias Soulé.

Roma believed they had earned a penalty in the 68th minute when Dybala was fouled by Kerim Aktarkoglu, but VAR review indicated the contact occurred just outside the penalty area.

Moments later, Wesley was brought down near the edge of the box, but no foul was given.

Romelu Lukaku came on as a substitute and within a minute, his pass across the box led to an effort from Oguz Aydin that deflected and required a desperate, reflex save from Svilar.

Paulo Dybala's solo effort lacked the power to trouble Ederson. As the game progressed, Fenerbahce seemed to gain an advantage in freshness. Nathan Ake's header from a free-kick struck the woodwork, with Brown being offside from the rebound.
