Allegri: Napoli Showed Progress Despite Defeat to Arsenal

Massimiliano Allegri, the manager of Napoli, maintains that his team exhibited progress even after suffering their third consecutive loss. He emphasized that Arsenal, a formidable opponent in the Champions League, needed an "extraordinary moment of quality" to find the back of the net against them.

Napoli were aware of the slim chances they had of securing a positive result against the Premier League champions and recent Champions League finalists, a team that only faltered on penalties against Paris Saint-Germain. The team was already grappling with a significant number of injuries, with key players such as Scott McTominay, Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa, Alessandro Buongiorno, Luca Marianucci, and Giovane sidelined. Furthermore, Noa Lang was excluded from the squad for disciplinary reasons, while David Neres was fit enough to be on the bench. The injury woes continued during the match, with Alex Meret and Alisson Santos forced off due to muscular issues, both of whom will undergo further tests to determine the severity of their injuries.

Although Arsenal dominated possession at the Stadio Maradona, it was a precisely executed strike from Martin Odegaard, which deflected in off the far post, that ultimately broke Napoli's resistance.

Allegri Highlights Positives for Napoli

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Allegri commented, "The first half was much more balanced, as we had more energy in our legs, with several players making their first starts of the season. We also managed to distribute the ball with greater quality. We made some poor decisions in the final third, crossing when there was no one in the box, and we are well aware of Arsenal's defensive strength."

"There were some positives, but when you make so many wrong choices against a team of this caliber, you run the risk of being punished. In the second half, Arsenal took control, and we displayed a good spirit of sacrifice. We certainly avoided conceding another three goals in 20 minutes, so that was a positive development."

This statement served as a direct reference to their recent Serie A match, where Napoli had held a 2-0 lead away against Inter Milan before succumbing to a 3-2 defeat.

This marks Napoli's third consecutive loss, the longest negative streak for the club since Walter Mazzarri's tenure in 2023. Considering they have lost three of their initial four games, it represents their worst start to a season since the 2000/01 campaign, which ultimately ended in relegation to Serie B.

We conceded too easily against Como and Inter, so there was a clear improvement in concentration tonight," Allegri continued. "It's disheartening to experience defeats, but we've learned from those errors. Some players are still regaining their fitness, and we have a very important match approaching against Bologna."

"The first thing we need to focus on is maintaining that balance and analyzing what is right and wrong. Becoming depressed right now will not be beneficial. These three defeats were very different, as the way we conceded five goals against Como and Inter was quite frankly ridiculous. Tonight, however, to score against us, Arsenal required an extraordinary moment of quality. We could have scored, and so could they, but at this level, technical decisions are paramount. I hear people suggesting we should press higher or lower, but it truly comes down to making the correct choices, otherwise, the opponents will make them."
