AS Roma has secured a spot in the Europa League following Inter Milan’s victory in the Coppa Italia. This outcome makes Donyell Malen’s transfer to the Giallorossi from Aston Villa a permanent one, with a fee of €25 million agreed upon.
Malen initially joined Roma on loan in January with an option to buy. This option was set to become mandatory if the club qualified for either the Champions League or the Europa League.
Inter Milan’s triumph in the Coppa Italia Final against Lazio confirmed Roma’s mathematical qualification for the Europa League. Had Lazio won, they would have secured a Europa League place, altering the qualification landscape for Serie A teams. In such a scenario, only the fifth-placed team in Serie A would have qualified for the Europa League, with the sixth-placed team relegated to the Conference League.
However, with Inter’s win, both the fifth and sixth-placed teams in Serie A for the 2026-27 season will compete in the Europa League, while the seventh-placed team will participate in the Conference League.
Currently, Roma holds fifth place in the Serie A standings, level on points with fourth-placed Milan. Como is close behind with 65 points and two matches remaining.
Malen has made a significant impact since his arrival at Roma, contributing 13 goals and 2 assists in 16 Serie A appearances.
