Inter Milan has achieved a remarkable double this season, adding the Coppa Italia to their Scudetto title. They defeated Lazio 2-0 in the final, with goals coming from an own goal by Adam Marusic and a strike from Lautaro Martinez.
The teams had met in Serie A just the previous week, with Inter emerging victorious 3-0. However, this Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico, though technically a neutral venue, saw a strong presence of Lazio supporters who had previously boycotted matches. For Inter, this win meant clinching the double, while Lazio’s manager Maurizio Sarri needed a victory to secure qualification for the Europa League.
Inter’s Hakan Calhanoglu was unavailable, but Marcus Thuram overcame a muscular issue to start. Lazio faced challenges with Ivan Provedel injured, and Danilo Cataldi and Nicolò Rovella not at full fitness. The Biancocelesti welcomed back Mattia Zaccagni and Nuno Tavares, but Sarri was serving a touchline ban, with assistant Marco Ianni on the bench.
The opening goal came in the 14th minute through an unfortunate own goal by Adam Marusic. A corner from Federico Dimarco was headed on by Marcus Thuram, and Marusic inadvertently directed it into his own net.
Inter doubled their lead in the 35th minute. Denzel Dumfries dispossessed Nuno Tavares near the penalty area and unselfishly rolled the ball across for Lautaro Martinez to tap in from close range.
Lazio had attempts on goal, including a promising drive from Tijjani Noslin that went just wide and a volleyed cross from Federico Dimarco that Luis Henrique couldn’t keep on target. Inter’s goalkeeper Josep Martinez made a crucial save from a Boulaye Dia effort and also denied Dia from a well-placed ball over the top.
In the closing stages, Inter missed a clear opportunity to make it 3-0 when Piotr Zielinski fired wide with an open goal after a deflection.
The match saw some heated moments, including a scuffle between Pedro and Dimarco. Inter’s goalkeeper Josep Martinez also had to be alert to smother a header from Dia.
This victory marks Inter’s 10th Coppa Italia title, their first since 2023. They will celebrate their success with an open-top bus parade on Sunday, showcasing both the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia.
