Why Juventus Had Two Goals Disallowed Against Lecce

Juventus had two goals chalked off during their away fixture against Lecce, both attributed to Dusan Vlahovic being in an offside position. However, only one of these instances necessitated an on-field review by VAR.

The Bianconeri initially found the back of the net within the first 15 seconds of the match, with Vlahovic converting a cross from Andrea Cambiaso. Despite scoring twice more during the game, neither of these goals was officially registered.

Juventus’s Goals Undone by VAR

The first disallowed goal occurred early in the second half. Vlahovic was deemed offside when he reacted to a rebound from a saved Cambiaso shot. VAR swiftly confirmed this clear offside infringement and advised the referee to disallow the goal.

The second disallowed goal proved more complex. Vlahovic did not make contact with the ball when a hurried clearance from Jamal Siebert inadvertently set up Cambiaso for another cross. Pierre Kalulu then headed the ball into the net. The ambiguity arose because Vlahovic never touched the ball, making it unclear if he was actively interfering with play.

This type of decision, being subjective rather than objective like the first offside, requires the referee’s personal judgment. Consequently, VAR instructed referee Andrea Colombo to conduct an on-field review at the monitor.

After reviewing the incident, the referee concluded that Vlahovic was indeed “interfering with play” as he nearly collided with Siebert, prompting the defensive error. This assessment led to the disallowance of the second Juventus goal.
