Stellini Criticizes De Bruyne’s Lack of Enthusiasm at Napoli, Compares Him to Modric

Cristian Stellini has responded sharply to Kevin De Bruyne’s criticism of former Napoli coach Antonio Conte. Stellini stated that De Bruyne “showed no joy or enthusiasm at being there, especially compared to Luka Modric at Milan.”

The controversy arose after Conte’s departure from Napoli by mutual agreement this summer. Despite leading the team to second place in Serie A and winning the Supercoppa Italiana, not everyone was pleased with his exit. De Bruyne himself confessed to Nieuwsblad in Belgium that he was “happy” Conte was gone, citing his defensive tactical approach.

De Bruyne Accused of Complaining About Napoli

In response to De Bruyne’s comments, Conte’s long-time assistant manager, Stellini, defended his former boss.

“Perhaps there is no point in Napoli signing players who are 33 years old with significant careers behind them, who prioritize aesthetics over season results,” Stellini told Corriere dello Sport.

“If experienced players are to arrive in Italy, they should at least set an example for younger players on how to embrace a club like Napoli with enthusiasm and joy. De Bruyne showed no joy or enthusiasm.”

“I can only hope that in the future, he experiences situations he prefers, perhaps with the Belgian national team under Rudy Garcia.”

Stellini went beyond tactics and past achievements, drawing a critical comparison between the former Manchester City star and ex-Real Madrid legend Luka Modric, who also joined Serie A last summer.

“I was truly impressed by how Modric settled at Milan, demonstrating leadership and enthusiasm, even though he was part of a team playing a very pragmatic style of football. He never went around criticizing the directors or the coach.

“Being a professional also means understanding how to improve the work environment by setting an example!” Stellini concluded.

If De Bruyne was displeased with Conte’s defensive style, the potential arrival of Max Allegri from Milan might not improve the situation.

Consequently, the Belgian’s future at Napoli remains uncertain.
