The PGA Tour makes its highly anticipated return to Miami this week with the inaugural Cadillac Championship, featuring a select field of 72 elite golfers competing for a substantial prize fund of $20 million.
Headlining the event is the current world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler. He will be joined by notable figures such as Tommy Fleetwood, the reigning Tour Championship winner, and Adam Scott, a past champion at this venue ten years ago. The tournament also boasts a strong lineup of major champions, including Justin Thomas, Shane Lowry, and Justin Rose.
However, some of the game’s top talents, including Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Robert MacIntyre, Ludvig Aberg, and Matt Fitzpatrick, all ranked within the top 15 globally, will not be participating.
This marks the 56th time the PGA Tour has held an event at this location. Notably, it is the second consecutive Signature Event that Rory McIlroy will miss, having previously skipped the RBC Heritage after his Masters victory. While many players are accustomed to playing multiple weeks in a row, it appears these top golfers have opted for a break, perhaps to prepare for upcoming major events rather than consecutive elevated tournaments.
The timing of the Cadillac Championship, preceding the elevated Truist Championship at Quail Hollow and the PGA Championship at Aronimink, offers a strategic pause for players, allowing them to avoid a demanding stretch of high-stakes competition.
The Doral Golf Resort and Spa, originally opened during the Kennedy administration, has a rich history with the PGA Tour, hosting an event for 45 consecutive years from 1962 to 2006. Following the introduction of the FedEx Cup, the iconic Blue Monster Course continued to host a World Golf Championship event until 2016.
The property was acquired by the Trump Organization four years prior and subsequently underwent a significant $250 million renovation. The tournament’s return as the Cadillac Championship signifies a new chapter, with Cadillac returning as the title sponsor after a period where their sponsorship of the WGC event concluded. The PGA Tour’s commitment to inclusivity and the Doral brand’s association with Donald Trump were factors in the sponsorship landscape at the time, though Commissioner Tim Finchem had cited funding issues.
The decision to reintroduce the tournament to the schedule in 2025 generated considerable excitement in Miami. Mayor Christi Fraga highlighted golf’s central role in the city’s identity and its long-standing connection with the PGA Tour. Dave Mack, who transitioned from a career with the Miami Dolphins to help launch the event, expressed enthusiasm for a week filled with exceptional golf and a lively atmosphere, emphasizing the community’s anticipation for the Tour’s return.
Organizers are planning a range of family-friendly and fan-oriented activities to enhance the event experience.
