Bologna manager Vincenzo Italiano has lauded Federico Bernardeschi’s successful reintegration into top-level football with Bologna, describing the move as a “bet that paid off.” He also expressed confidence in young winger Jonathan Rowe’s ability to achieve championship status, provided he elevates his training intensity.
Speaking ahead of Bologna’s crucial away match against Atalanta, Italiano acknowledged the team’s slim but persistent hopes of securing a Conference League berth. “We can say it now because the season is almost over, we won the bet,” Italiano stated regarding Bernardeschi’s impact. He elaborated on the initial doubts surrounding the player’s return to European football after a hiatus, emphasizing Bernardeschi’s revitalized form and enduring passion for the game.
On the topic of Jonathan Rowe, Italiano offered a mix of encouragement and constructive criticism. “He can become a champion if only he understood that training requires the same intensity as a match,” the manager advised. He clarified that Rowe’s training is not subpar but stressed the importance of this developmental leap in intensity for his continued improvement.
Addressing the team’s contrasting home and away performances, Italiano admitted a lack of a definitive explanation. He speculated that excessive enthusiasm at home might have led to a loss of rationality, while away from home, the team has displayed remarkable composure and efficiency, often capitalizing on early chances. He acknowledged the fan frustration stemming from this inconsistency.
Italiano also confirmed that goalkeeper Skorupski would start if fit, having made a commitment to the player earlier in the week. Undeterred by the challenging Conference League race, he asserted Bologna’s commitment to fighting until the final whistle. “They have nothing left to ask of the season. We will try until the end,” he declared.
Reflecting on the recent Coppa Italia final, Italiano spoke with evident emotion, expressing pride in lifting the trophy and achieving something remarkable. “Seeing that match made me think that we were there and we rejoiced. I am proud of having lifted that trophy and doing something incredible,” he concluded.
