Stephan El Shaarawy has officially confirmed that he will be leaving AS Roma when his contract concludes on June 30th. This marks the end of a decade-long tenure with the Giallorossi, during which he became a highly cherished figure in the club’s recent history.
With only two matches remaining – a derby against Lazio and a final-day trip to Verona – the winger made his departure public as he prepares to leave the Italian capital as a free agent.
El Shaarawy Concludes Ten-Year Roma Stint with 65 Goals and a Conference League Title
El Shaarawy first joined Roma in January 2016 after a period at Monaco. Prior to that, he had already established himself as one of Serie A’s most exciting young wingers at AC Milan. He later moved to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua in the summer of 2019, but returned to Roma in January 2021 and has remained a consistent member of the squad ever since.
Throughout his two spells in Rome, the Italian international of Egyptian heritage made 346 appearances for the club, contributing 65 goals and 50 assists. The pinnacle of his time at the Stadio Olimpico was in the 2021/22 season, when Roma secured the UEFA Conference League under José Mourinho, marking the club’s first European trophy in 61 years.
His departure had been anticipated for some time. Reports indicated that coach Gian Piero Gasperini had advocated for contract renewals for El Shaarawy and three other out-of-contract players earlier this month. However, the winger’s announcement suggests that these efforts did not result in an agreement.
