Lautaro Martinez emphasized the difficulty of Inter securing the Serie A and Coppa Italia double this season, especially after the previous year’s performance. Meanwhile, Denzel Dumfries humorously commented that his captain seemed “angry with me.”
The Coppa Italia final was decided in the first half at the Stadio Olimpico. An own goal by Lazio’s Adam Marusic from a Federico Dimarco corner, followed by Denzel Dumfries dispossessing Nuno Tavares to set up Lautaro Martinez for a simple tap-in, sealed the victory.
This marked Inter’s 10th Coppa Italia title. It also represents the first time they have achieved the Serie A and Coppa Italia double since Jose Mourinho’s historic Treble in 2010, which famously included the Champions League.
Lautaro Martinez and Dumfries Celebrate Inter’s Success
“It means a lot, because it wasn’t easy after what happened last season, to get back on track, but we managed a truly remarkable season,” stated Lautaro Martinez to Sport Mediaset. “We showed good results, performances, intensity, so I am proud that we are finishing with another trophy that means so much.”
He added, “There is always so much talk about Inter, but you have to look at what we’ve achieved over so many years. We have to keep just sticking to our path, this is another trophy.”
This achievement is particularly significant for a team that ended the previous season without any silverware and in disappointment, following their Champions League Final defeat under Simone Inzaghi.
“We’d give Chivu a 10 out of 10, because he helped us so much,” added the captain, referring to Cristian Chivu, who had limited senior coaching experience at Parma before taking the reins.
Denzel Dumfries, who had a season hampered by a serious ankle injury requiring surgery, made a strong return and provided the assist for Lautaro Martinez’s decisive goal. “I am happy, it was a difficult period, I am glad that I managed to get back and help my teammates. I’m glad I assisted Lauti, who was angry with me for not giving him as many assists this season,” Dumfries joked to Sport Mediaset.
The Dutch international was recognized as the MVP by the Lega Serie A for his performance in the Coppa Italia Final.
