Inter have been crowned champions of Italy for the 21st time, with Marcus Thuram and Henrikh Mkhitaryan ensuring a 2-0 victory over Parma at a jubilant San Siro.
Although only a point was needed to officially secure the title following Napoli’s draw, Inter entered the match with a strong intent. Hakan Calhanoglu and Luis Henrique were sidelined due to injury, while Lautaro Martinez was available on the bench, and Alessandro Bastoni made his return to the starting lineup for the first time in three weeks. Parma, having already secured their Serie A safety, played with less pressure, missing Matija Frigan and Benja Cremaschi.
Early in the game, Denzel Dumfries’s header narrowly missed the target from a Nicolò Barella cross. Parma also had a chance to take the lead, but Mateo Pellegrino’s volley from close range was off target.
Inter came agonizingly close to scoring in the 26th minute. A well-constructed play found Barella, whose powerful shot struck the crossbar. The rebound deflected off Parma’s goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and then off Marcus Thuram, but Suzuki managed to recover and deny Thuram from the doorstep.
Dumfries saw his shot blocked by Abdoulaye Ndiaye after a neat interplay. However, Inter finally broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time. Marcus Thuram timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap from a Piotr Zielinski through ball, controlled it, and calmly slotted it home from seven yards with his right foot. This marked Thuram’s fifth consecutive Serie A match with a goal.
Pio Esposito was substituted at halftime due to a back injury, with Ange-Yoan Bonny coming on. Lautaro Martinez also made an appearance for the final 25 minutes of the match.
Federico Dimarco nearly provided another assist, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan was unable to convert at the far post, with Hans Nicolussi Caviglia clearing the danger.
Dumfries stretched to fire another Dimarco cross over the bar, while Lautaro Martinez showed good skill to cut inside a defender and bend a shot that was saved by Suzuki.
The second goal arrived when Lautaro Martinez again exploited the offside trap on the right and rolled the ball across for Mkhitaryan to tap in from close range, sealing the victory and the championship.
Parma had the ball in the net late on through Nesta Elphege, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Substitute Davide Frattesi almost added a third goal shortly after coming on, but his volley from a Dimarco cross trickled under Suzuki, with the goalkeeper just managing to prevent it from crossing the line.
