Italian media are buzzing with reports that AS Roma are pursuing a deal for Olympique de Marseille forward Mason Greenwood. This potential transfer could be financially advantageous for both the French club and Greenwood’s former team, Manchester United.
Manchester United Entitled to a Share of Greenwood’s Next Transfer
According to leading Italian publications like La Gazzetta dello Sport, Greenwood is Roma’s primary target to bolster their attack for the upcoming season under Gian Piero Gasperini. Roma has reportedly initiated direct contact with the player’s father, and the positive experience of Donyell Malen, who joined the Stadio Olimpico in January, is seen as a motivating factor.
Marseille is reportedly looking to secure a transfer fee in the range of €50 million to €60 million for the 24-year-old. They acquired Greenwood for a reported €26 million plus a substantial sell-on clause from Manchester United two years ago.
The Manchester Evening News reports that Manchester United holds a clause entitling them to “up to 50%” of Greenwood’s next transfer fee. This means that if Marseille achieves their desired €50 million to €60 million valuation, United could stand to gain between €25 million and €30 million.
Meanwhile, Marseille may find themselves needing to sell players before June 30 to adhere to French financial regulations, which could expedite a move for Greenwood.
