Freiburg Attempting to Sign Forgotten Italy Talent Gnonto from Leeds United

According to German media reports, SC Freiburg, a club in the German Bundesliga, is actively pursuing a move to acquire the services of Italian forward Wilfried Gnonto, who is currently out of favor at Leeds United and struggling in the Premier League. This pursuit is happening ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

Could Freiburg Secure a Deal for 13-Time Italy International Gnonto?

Wilfried Gnonto has been playing in England since the summer of 2022, after his transfer to Leeds United from FC Zurich on a five-year contract. During his time with Leeds, Gnonto has managed to score two goals and provide seven assists in 45 Premier League appearances. He also contributed 17 goals and eight assists in 79 matches in the Championship.

His early potential led to a call-up to the Italy national team under Roberto Mancini in 2022. He subsequently earned 13 international caps between 2022 and 2023. Notably, he became the youngest player ever to score for the Italian national team, achieving this milestone at the age of 18 years and 222 days during a Nations League match against Germany, which Italy lost 5-2.

However, Gnonto has not featured for the Italian national team in the last three years.

Recent reports from Florian Plettenberg and Sky Sport DE indicate that Bundesliga club Freiburg is keen on bringing Gnonto to Germany this summer. The report from Saturday suggests that Leeds United is open to a sale, or potentially a loan deal that includes an obligation to buy. Sky Sports further notes that while the operation is not straightforward, Freiburg is making a strong push to secure the 22-year-old forward’s signature.
