Nico Gonzalez, currently on loan at Atletico Madrid from Juventus, has reportedly reached an agreement to extend his stay with the Spanish club until the 2026-27 season. However, a significant hurdle remains: the automatic €32 million purchase obligation clause in his loan deal has expired, necessitating new negotiations between the two clubs.
Gonzalez has spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Atletico Madrid. The initial agreement involved a €1 million loan fee for Juventus, with potential bonuses reaching €2 million. Crucially, the deal included an obligation for Atletico to buy Gonzalez permanently for an additional €32 million.
This mandatory purchase clause would have been triggered if Gonzalez played 45 minutes or more in 60% of the LaLiga matches for which he was available during the 2025-26 season. Having been a Juventus player for the first three league games of the season, Gonzalez would have needed to feature for at least 45 minutes in 21 league matches to meet the condition.
While Gonzalez has appeared in 24 LaLiga games this season, he has only completed 45 minutes or more in 16 of them. With only two league matches remaining in the season, and Gonzalez currently sidelined with a muscular injury, it is highly unlikely that the appearance threshold will be met.
Despite the expired obligation, both Atletico Madrid and head coach Diego Simeone are keen to keep Nico Gonzalez at the club beyond his current loan spell. However, they are unwilling to meet the previously agreed-upon €32 million transfer fee. Reports suggest that a new agreement is in place for a contract extending until the summer of 2031.
Sources indicate that an agreement has been reached between Gonzalez’s representatives and Atletico Madrid. Juventus, meanwhile, is eager to finalize a sale, preferably sooner rather than later. The Italian club faces a pressing need to generate funds before June 30 to comply with UEFA financial regulations.
Juventus must secure a transfer fee exceeding €20 million to avoid a capital loss on Gonzalez. Current reports suggest that Atletico is not prepared to pay more than €30 million for the winger, who recently turned 28. Nevertheless, there is optimism that a compromise can be reached, with a fee in the region of €25 million being a potential middle ground.
