Fikayo Tomori’s England World Cup Ambitions and Sympathy for Italy

Fikayo Tomori has openly stated his aspiration to be part of England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America. Despite his own international ambitions, he has conveyed his feelings of sympathy for the Italian national team and his former teammate, Sandro Tonali. Tomori mentioned, “I supported them in Bosnia, I was convinced they could achieve it.”

Tomori is currently preparing for the final five matches of the Serie A season with AC Milan. His team faces a significant fixture against Juventus, who are in fourth place, this weekend. Milan, currently second, is focused on securing Champions League qualification, their primary goal for the season.

Following the conclusion of the domestic league campaign, attention will shift towards the 2026 World Cup, where Tomori’s England team is expected to be among the favorites. Tomori, who has earned six caps for England, acknowledges that his place in the World Cup squad is not guaranteed. He was part of the squad during the March international break and earned his first cap in nearly three years in a 1-1 draw against Uruguay. However, it was noted that his call-up was partly due to an injury sustained by Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah.

Despite these circumstances, Tomori is determined to earn his spot in the England World Cup squad based on his own performances. He stated in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, “I have hope and the desire to play at the World Cup. I will give everything in this final part of the season to make it happen.”

Tomori also expressed his regret regarding Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup and shared his feelings for his former Milan teammate, Sandro Tonali. He commented, “I am sorry for your national team and for Tonali, who is my friend. I supported the Azzurri in Bosnia and I was convinced that they could achieve it.”
