Milan faces the risk of not securing Champions League qualification, with reports indicating that a failure to finish in the top four could lead to significant consequences, including the departure of Luka Modric.
The Rossoneri have struggled recently, winning only one of their last five Serie A matches. This slump has allowed fifth-placed Roma to close the gap to just three points with only three games left in the season.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, missing out on a Champions League spot would have considerable repercussions for Milan, impacting not only their prestige and financial standing.
Crucially, Croatian star Luka Modric would almost certainly leave San Siro at the season’s end if Milan does not secure a top-four finish. Modric’s current contract is set to expire in June, and Milan’s option to extend his stay until 2027 is contingent on the 40-year-old agreeing to remain with the club.
Previous reports from Sky Sport suggested that Modric’s decision to stay at Milan was tied to Champions League qualification and the continued tenure of Massimiliano Allegri for another season.
The future of the Italian tactician himself at San Siro would also be in question without a top-four finish. Allegri’s contract is currently set to extend automatically to 2028 if the team qualifies for the Champions League, with his current deal expiring in June 2027.
However, failing to achieve this primary season objective could prompt the coach to seek opportunities elsewhere, particularly with the head coach position for the Italian national team potentially becoming available.
