Gian Piero Gasperini expressed confidence in Roma’s ability to re-enter the race for a Champions League spot following their commanding 4-0 victory over Fiorentina. He emphasized that while the team cannot afford any missteps, their current condition is strong.
Roma delivered a dominant performance at the Stadio Olimpico, establishing a 3-0 lead by halftime with goals from Gianluca Mancini, Wesley, and Mario Hermoso. Niccolò Pisilli extended their advantage to 4-0 in the second half, assisted by Donyell Malen, who also hit the post twice.
Gasperini’s Unwavering Belief in Roma
“We’ve made significant changes to our attack since the middle of the season, leading to more goals, though we’ve also conceded more,” Gasperini told Sky Sport Italia. “It was positive to see four different players score and some excellent team play. We’re in a good run of form, even though every match is tight and challenging. We understand that any error could be detrimental to our chances, but we are performing well.”
The coach consistently maintained faith in their potential to compete for a top-four finish.
“I recognized that we had the opportunity to bring players back from injury, and with a full squad, we could achieve a series of positive results, demonstrating our greater potential.”
This win brings Roma to within one point of fourth-placed Juventus and three points of third-placed Milan, intensifying the battle for Champions League qualification. Como also remains in contention, sitting in sixth place with 62 points, just two behind Roma.
“This is a very strong squad. Crucially, I’ve never had to exert excessive control over them, as they have been fully focused since day one. I’ve encountered no issues with their mentality, and their recent performances have shown even greater determination.”
“There is a strong bond between myself and the players, and we are determined to achieve the goal we set out for at the beginning.”
The January arrival of Donyell Malen from Aston Villa has clearly boosted the squad. However, the future of Roma’s attacking line remains uncertain, particularly with Paulo Dybala’s contract nearing its end.
“We were without key attackers like Dybala and Soulé for extended periods this season due to injuries, and El Shaarawy was also sidelined for a while. We experienced a shortage of forwards, including long-term absentees like Dovbyk and Ferguson who were out of action,” Gasperini added. “Despite these challenges, the players gave their absolute best in every game, so I cannot fault their commitment. Today, they appear stronger than ever. With three games remaining, we know we must secure maximum points and hope for slip-ups from our rivals.”
Manu Kone made his return to the starting lineup today, his first appearance since a muscular injury sustained in mid-March.
“For significant stretches, this team boasted the best defensive record in Europe. We lost some players and paid the price, but we are now seeing players return, forming the squad we had at the start, along with Malen. Under these circumstances, it is naturally easier to achieve results.”
With representatives of the Friedkin family present, Gasperini was asked if discussions about improving the squad for next season were taking place.
“As I’ve stated, my focus is on the present. The time for discussing the future will come.”
