Iga Swiatek Enlists Rafael Nadal's Former Coach Francisco Roig to Revive Clay Court Prowess

Iga Swiatek, having recently concluded her partnership with Wim Fissette less than a year after securing her maiden Wimbledon title, is reportedly embarking on a trial collaboration with Francisco Roig in anticipation of the upcoming clay court season.

The ex-World No. 1, whose 2025 season saw a noticeable decline and who has experienced an underwhelming start to 2026, was observed training at the Rafa Nadal Academy in preparation for the clay circuit. It now appears she is poised to integrate Roig, a well-known figure from that very environment, into her coaching staff.

Francisco Roig's Coaching Career Post-Rafael Nadal

Although Roig's name will forever be intrinsically linked with Rafael Nadal, having served as the Spaniard's assistant coach for 17 years during a remarkable era that saw 22 Grand Slam victories, his subsequent coaching roles have tended to be brief.

His initial coaching engagement after departing Nadal's team was with Matteo Berrettini, a collaboration that extended for approximately ten months. Subsequently, he partnered with Emma Raducanu; this alliance initially demonstrated potential and led to several commendable performances before an unforeseen termination at the beginning of 2026, reportedly due to diverging technical philosophies.

More recently, Roig was mentoring the promising French big-server Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, but has now concluded that arrangement to be accessible for Swiatek.

A Focused Trial Period for the Clay Season

While an official announcement from Swiatek's team is still pending, indications are that this collaboration will commence with an evaluative trial, probably encompassing the entire clay season – a surface on which both Roig (as a coach) and Swiatek (as a player) have historically demonstrated significant success.

Notably, Swiatek did not secure a single title on her preferred clay surface last year, a situation she is undoubtedly eager to rectify as she endeavors to reassert her status as a formidable presence on the tour, echoing her dominant run from 2022 to 2024.

Currently ranked World No. 4, the Polish athlete is poised to initiate her clay season at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart in two weeks. This event could potentially signal the dawn of a new chapter in her career, with Roig, at least for the foreseeable future, providing strategic guidance.
