Holger Rune Confirms Comeback After Achilles Injury Recovery

Holger Rune is slated to return to the professional tennis circuit at the Hamburg Open this May. This highly anticipated comeback was officially announced by both the tournament organizers and Rune himself via social media platforms.

The former top-10 player has been absent from competition since October of last year due to a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left leg. Rune now has a confirmed date and tournament lined up for his return to the tour.

Rune's Return Timeline

Injury Temporarily Halted Progress

Last year, Rune was actively pursuing a spot in the Nitto ATP Finals when, during a match against Ugo Humbert at the Stockholm Open, he suffered an injury. While leading in the first set, the Danish player felt a distinct pop near his left ankle at the beginning of the second set. This forced him to retire from the match. Subsequent medical assessments confirmed his fears: a torn Achilles tendon, an injury that typically requires a significant recovery period.

Rehabilitation Ahead of Schedule

Rune commenced his rehabilitation process promptly, undergoing surgery and then spending a considerable amount of time at the advanced Aspetar facility in Doha, Qatar. The recovery for the former World No. 4 proceeded exceptionally well, allowing him to be ready for a comeback just over seven months after sustaining the injury. This is notably faster than the usual 9 to 12-month recovery time associated with such injuries.

French Open Decision Pending

It is still uncertain whether Rune will participate in the French Open following his return in Hamburg, or if he will choose to skip the Grand Slam event due to the demanding best-of-five-set format. Regardless of his immediate schedule, Rune now has a clear plan for his comeback as he embarks on his journey to climb back up the rankings and realize the significant potential he has demonstrated since his junior career.
