Serie A | Lecce 1-1 Fiorentina: Tiago Gabriel’s Late Goal Secures Crucial Point

Tiago Gabriel’s late equalizer maintained Lecce’s hopes of avoiding relegation and allowed them to draw level with Cremonese in the standings. However, Fiorentina solidified their eight-point lead over the relegation zone with only five matches remaining in the season.

This was a critical match for both teams in their fight to avoid dropping to Serie B. Fiorentina, despite their recent Europa Conference League exit, managed to secure a vital point. Key players returned for Fiorentina after suspension, though several others remained sidelined due to injury.

Lecce started the game aggressively, with Lassana Coulibaly testing the Fiorentina defense. Robin Gosens of Fiorentina was forced off early due to a thigh injury, replaced by youngster Luis Balbo. Lecce pressed with a series of corners, and Walid Cheddira had a header cleared off the line by Nicolò Fagioli.

Despite Lecce’s pressure, Fiorentina took the lead in the 30th minute. Rolando Mandragora’s pass found Jack Harrison, who cut inside and scored a well-placed left-footed shot from the edge of the box. This marked Harrison’s first goal for Fiorentina and ended a year-long league goal drought for him.

Fiorentina had an opportunity to double their lead on a quick counter-attack, but Roberto Piccoli narrowly missed the target. Both Mandragora and Oumar Ngom had weak attempts that didn’t trouble the Lecce goalkeeper.

After halftime, Lecce continued to push for an equalizer. A scramble in the Fiorentina box was crucialy blocked by Marin Pongracic. Ramadani fired wide, and a swerving shot from substitute Lameck Banda forced a fine fingertip save from David De Gea.

Lecce finally found their equalizer from the resulting corner in the 71st minute. Tiago Gabriel got in front of Cher Ndour to head home Antonino Gallo’s set-piece, ending a three-game scoring drought for his team.

Both sides had chances to win in the closing stages. Ndour’s header went just over the bar, and Pierotti missed a golden opportunity from close range for Lecce. Despite throwing everything forward, Lecce’s season-long struggle to convert chances was evident as they were unable to secure all three points.
