Napoli Confirm Gilmour Injury Details After Missing 2026 World Cup with Scotland

Napoli has shed light on the injury sustained by Billy Gilmour, which has unfortunately ruled him out of Scotland’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

The player suffered the injury during a friendly match against Curacao, which Napoli won 4-1. Initially, the injury did not appear to be severe.

There was hope that he had left the field as a precautionary measure before halftime. However, subsequent scans at a local hospital revealed the extent of the damage, proving to be a significant setback.

The Scottish national team officially announced that a knee injury would prevent Gilmour from participating in the World Cup, set to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Napoli subsequently provided further specifics on their official website, confirming that Gilmour has suffered a Grade II sprain to his right knee.

According to early reports, this injury will necessitate a recovery period of one to two months. It is anticipated that he will be fit to return for the start of pre-season training.

This is a particularly disappointing blow for the player, who had already missed a substantial portion of the current season following surgery in November 2025 to address a groin issue.

That previous injury kept him sidelined until February 2026. He had recently begun to regain his match fitness, seemingly in good time for the World Cup with Scotland, only to face this latest setback.
