Giovanni Malagò, formerly the head of CONI, has officially declared his intention to compete for the FIGC Presidency. This announcement follows the endorsement from Lega Serie B, and Malagò stated, “I will file my candidacy tomorrow.”
Malagò Confirms FIGC Presidential Bid, Expected to Secure Majority Support
Malagò is recognized as one of the two primary contenders for the vacant FIGC President position, alongside Giancarlo Abete. The role became available after Gabriele Gravina’s resignation in late March, directly following Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Although Malagò has held discussions with representatives from Lega Serie A, Serie B, Serie C, the LND (Amateur Leagues), the players’ association, and the coaches’ association, he formally confirmed his candidacy for the FIGC Presidency on Tuesday evening.
“I can confirm that tomorrow morning, I will submit my application for the presidency of the football federation,” Malagò informed attendees at a charity dinner hosted by Lega Serie A, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Malagò’s declaration came shortly after the confirmation of Lega Serie B’s support. Having already secured backing from Lega Serie A, the players’ association, and the coaches’ association, the addition of Lega Serie B’s endorsement positions him to achieve a decisive majority of the electoral votes.
The distribution of votes for the upcoming FIGC Presidential election is as follows:
- Lega Serie A: 20 delegates, contributing 18% of the votes.
- Lega Serie B: 20 delegates, contributing 6% of the votes.
- Lega Pro (Serie C): 57 delegates, contributing 12% of the votes.
- LND (Amateur Leagues): 99 delegates, contributing 34% of the votes.
- Players’ association: 52 delegates, contributing 20% of the votes.
- Coaches’ association: 26 delegates, contributing 10% of the votes.
