Gasperini and Ranieri Await Friedkin’s Verdict Amidst Tense Meetings

Despite recent indications of support from AS Roma’s owners, coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s position remains precarious following a significant conflict with Senior Advisor Claudio Ranieri last week.

The atmosphere at Roma is reportedly becoming increasingly strained, with multiple reports suggesting that either Gasperini or Ranieri will depart the club at the conclusion of the current season.

Ranieri publicly responded to criticisms from Gasperini prior to a match against Pisa. Gasperini had previously voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the club’s transfer dealings and the handling of injured players.

Following Ranieri’s public statement, a tense meeting took place at Trigoria earlier this week, which also involved sporting director Frederic Massara, according to Gazzetta. The report from “La Gazzetta dello Sport” indicates that Ranieri even contemplated resigning after this latest disagreement. Simultaneously, Gasperini held a conference call with the club’s owners.

Owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin find themselves in a challenging situation. They reportedly view Ranieri as a cornerstone of their long-term project but also acknowledge Gasperini’s contributions on the field this season. Consequently, they must make a definitive decision regarding Gasperini or Ranieri for the 2026-27 season, as their working relationship appears to be beyond repair.

Furthermore, reports suggest that Gasperini is displeased that some of Ranieri’s close associates have received contract extensions without his consultation. Ed Shipley, a key figure for the Friedkins in Rome, has also reportedly submitted reports detailing instances of Gasperini’s alleged inappropriate conduct.

AS Roma appointed Gasperini last summer, and his current contract is set to run until 2028.
