While Jonathan David has garnered significant attention during his debut Serie A season, another Canadian talent is capturing the spotlight in Italy: Sassuolo midfielder Ismaël Koné.
With six goals in 30 Serie A appearances this season, Koné, a midfielder for Sassuolo and the Canadian national team, has emerged as one of the most exciting prospects in Italy’s top football league.
The 23-year-old joined Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium from Marseille in the summer of 2025, marking his first season in Serie A.
Sassuolo experienced a challenging start to the season, characterized by inconsistency. However, under the guidance of 2006 Italy World Cup winner Fabio Grosso, the team secured convincing results and performances, ensuring their survival in the league with several games remaining.
A standout moment for Sassuolo was their impressive 2-1 victory over Atalanta at the Mapei Stadium on March 1, 2026.

Koné opened the scoring in the 23rd minute of that match, earning praise from his coach after the game. Grosso described it as a “crazy game” where the players “wrote their names in the history books of this club.” He further commented on the performance, stating, “We had been looking for the icing on the cake, and this was the icing with a big cherry on top… We’re glad to have picked up some important points, and to achieve it with a performance like this.”
In contrast, Juventus striker David has experienced a more mixed first season in Turin. Expectations were high for the former Lille forward upon his free transfer to the Allianz Stadium last summer.
Koné has demonstrated greater consistency than David this season. While it’s acknowledged that the Sassuolo midfielder faces less pressure than David at Juventus, Koné’s impact has been undeniable.
Even after scoring against Bologna, David received varied opinions from Italian football analysts. Former Milan and Italy midfielder Massimo Ambrosini noted, “I think David was more involved in other games than in this one, but he’s well-liked by the group, and his teammates defended him.” He added, “Spalletti has said he needs a striker who can do different things, but he has improved. I don’t see in him the ruthlessness of a penalty-box killer, something he had before arriving here. He’s always done it throughout his career, but he hasn’t shown it here yet.”
There is no doubt that Koné has established himself in his inaugural Serie A season, not only through his goals but also through his remarkable stamina and the quality he brings to Sassuolo’s midfield. Keep an eye on him as a potential standout at the 2026 World Cup, and anticipate transfer speculation surrounding the ex-Marseille player in the upcoming summer.
