Fiorentina and Sassuolo ended their Serie A encounter at the Stadio Franchi in a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon. This result means that Fiorentina has not yet mathematically secured their place in the top flight for the next season, with the threat of relegation to Serie B still present.
The Viola were without key strikers Moise Kean and Roberto Piccoli, opting to field Albert Gudmundsson in the central attacking role, supported by wingers Jack Harrison and Manor Solomon. Sassuolo, on the other hand, were missing Domenico Berardi and presented a front three of Christian Volpato, Andrea Pinamonti, and Armand Lauriente.
The first significant save of the match came ten minutes in when Sassuolo launched a counter-attack. A neat one-two between Ismael Kone and Lauriente on the left flank set up a chance, but David De Gea reacted sharply with his legs to deny the midfielder.
Fiorentina’s closest opportunity in the initial stages came around the 20-minute mark. Albert Gudmundsson’s backheel flick from a Dodo cross forced Stefano Turati to tip the awkward effort behind for a corner.
Later in the half, Jack Harrison delivered a cross from the right wing. Gudmundsson was closely marked, and while he couldn’t convert from the center of the box, Manor Solomon had an opportunity from close range at the back post but failed to hit the target.
Fiorentina had further chances and should have capitalised when they found themselves in a four-on-two situation in the Sassuolo penalty area following a swift counter-attack initiated by Dodo. However, Solomon inadvertently took the ball off his teammate Luca Ranieri, setting up Gudmundsson, who couldn’t beat Turati.
The game opened up in the second half, with both teams creating opportunities. Sassuolo came closest to scoring when Pinamonti struck the post following a well-placed ball from Lauriente on the left.
The 0-0 scoreline means Fiorentina must wait at least another week to confirm their Serie A status. They currently hold a nine-point lead over Cremonese, who are in the relegation zone, with only four matches remaining in the 2025-26 season.
Sunday’s result leaves Sassuolo in 10th place with 46 points, appearing set for a respectable mid-table finish.
