Zola: ‘Italy must start from the ground up, we must understand importance of young players’

Gianfranco Zola has urged a fundamental reevaluation of Italian football's youth development system. He stressed that Italy must tackle ingrained structural issues to prevent a recurrence of its painful third consecutive absence from the World Cup.

Speaking as the vice-president of Lega Pro before the Serie C Coppa Italia final between Latina and Potenza, the former Chelsea and Italy forward expressed profound disappointment following Tuesday’s penalty shootout loss to Bosnia. Zola seized the opportunity to convey a message transcending the match's outcome.

"The failure to participate in the World Cup deeply affects us," Zola stated. "Football holds immense importance in Italy, and yesterday's events have profoundly impacted me. We must thoroughly assess the problem and commit to resolving it, recognizing the critical role of our young players."

Zola emphasized that genuine solutions must emerge from grassroots football upwards, rather than relying on superficial fixes at the international level.

"We must rebuild from the foundations, focusing on establishing conditions that foster the quality development of our young players," he asserted. "This requires extensive and profound work." He further underscored the necessity of continuity in youth development, advocating for consistent competitive opportunities for talented youngsters instead of their marginalization at club level.

As Lega Pro vice-president, Zola holds a direct interest in this developmental process, stressing the significant role the third tier of Italian football can play.

"Within Lega Pro, we are consistently striving to encourage clubs to increase their investment in nurturing our young players optimally," he explained.

He concluded by directing a message specifically to the next generation of players.

"While coaches and facilities are crucial, the players themselves must also demonstrate strong work ethic. Becoming true sportspeople demands commitment, passion, and dedication."
