Play-off Tensions Rise: Wales and Bosnia Clash Over Cooper-Tahirovic Controversy

As the World Cup play-offs draw closer, an escalating dispute between Wales and Bosnia and Herzegovina is adding drama to the build-up. These two nations are potential opponents for Italy in the final play-off round, where a coveted spot at the World Cup tournament is at stake.

Italy is set to host Northern Ireland in their semi-final clash this Thursday. The victor of that match will then travel to face either Wales or Bosnia in a winner-takes-all final, determining who progresses to the main tournament.

Amidst the final preparations, the Bosnian football federation has formally raised concerns regarding Brondby's Welsh head coach, Steeve Cooper. Cooper stands accused of deliberately sidelining Bosnian midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic, allegedly to disrupt his match rhythm ahead of a potential play-off showdown between Wales and Bosnia in Cardiff.

Tahirovic was a regular starter for Brondby during the first half of the 2025-26 season but has seen his playing time drastically reduced, accumulating only 13 minutes across his team’s last four matches leading into the international break.

Bosnia's head coach, Sergej Barbarez, has fueled the controversy with his blunt remarks. He stated, "Tahirovic has told me things that border on the unbelievable, relating to the nationality of his coach." Barbarez added that Cooper allegedly wished Tahirovic well in all aspects except for his national team duties, promising that "everything would go back to normal after the break."

However, Brondby's press officer, Soren Hanghoj, has since clarified the situation, asserting that Tahirovic's recent exclusion from the squad was due to disciplinary reasons. Hanghoj emphasized that this decision was made collectively by the club, not solely by coach Cooper. Furthermore, Tahirovic himself has reportedly communicated with Cooper, explaining that his earlier statements were "misunderstood."
