Oriali warns of difficult times for Italy under Mancini

Gabriele Oriali, the Italy team manager, has cautioned that the national team is entering a "difficult spell" with Roberto Mancini's return. He also strongly criticized Juventus ultras for their "shameful" disrespect towards Sandro Mazzola.

The Azzurri have convened at the Coverciano training ground to prepare for upcoming Nations League fixtures. Their schedule includes matches against Belgium on Friday, followed by games against Turkiye and France in late September and early October.

Oriali, who has rejoined the Italy staff alongside coach Mancini, commented on the current state of Italian football. "It is certainly not the best moment for Italian football; we know we are heading into a difficult spell," he stated to Rai 2.

"The players need to recognize this. It's vital for everyone to understand the situation, share the responsibility, and maintain respect and discipline, which always helps. By rediscovering team spirit and group unity, we can achieve positive results."

This sense of unity is currently lacking in Italian football, as demonstrated by the Juventus ultras who turned their backs during a minute's silence honoring Italy and Inter legend Sandro Mazzola. Oriali, a former Inter player himself, shared his personal connection with Mazzola. "I remember Mazzola warmly from my first training sessions at Pinetina; he welcomed me with open arms," he recalled.

"He even gave me a ride home once after training. People were amazed to see him. I have only positive memories of him as a teammate and a person. We should also remember his significant contributions as a director who brought Ronaldo to Serie A."

"The ultras turning their backs was a disgraceful display. I hope these individuals can be identified and barred from stadiums; it's truly shameful. Some champions transcend club loyalties, and this was simply a deplorable act."
