Moreira Delighted by First San Siro Goal, Aims for Starting Role

Diego Moreira found scoring at San Siro for AC Milan a profound experience, particularly in front of the home supporters. He is now focused on demonstrating to coach Ruben Amorim that he is ready to be a consistent starter after contributing three goals from the bench.

Following a series of disappointing Serie A draws against Juventus and Lazio, and a recent 2-0 Europa League loss to Benfica at home, Milan faced significant pressure. Christian Pulisic, returning from injury sustained during the World Cup with the USMNT, marked his first start of the season by netting his first club goal since December 2025. This goal ended a 266-day drought where he had taken 39 shots without success.

Pulisic also played a key role in Adrien Rabiot's goal, initiating the play with a back-heel pass. Diego Moreira then sealed the 3-0 victory over Lecce with his own strike.

Moreira's Impact as a Substitute

Diego Moreira has now scored three goals in as many Serie A appearances, accumulating just 127 minutes of playing time in the league. Notably, all three goals were scored in his last 75 minutes on the field.

“Not bad!” Moreira remarked with a laugh when informed of this statistic during an interview with DAZN Italia. “I truly enjoy scoring at San Siro. It holds significant meaning for me and my family. I am so happy to score in front of the fans, to secure the win and a clean sheet. With the upcoming international break, I aim to rest and return with renewed energy.”

Despite not being in the starting lineup, Moreira appears undeterred by his current role as a substitute. “I know what I want in my life and career, so staying focused is crucial. Although I don’t start, I’ve come off the bench and scored. My objective is to give the team my absolute best. I must continue working, continue believing, and that's how I'll show the coach I'm ready to start every game.”

Moreira, a Belgian international, has Portuguese heritage. He previously played in England for Chelsea and in France for Olympique Lyonnais and RC Strasbourg.

“I understand Italian, but I can’t speak it fluently yet. I currently speak four languages, but by December, I hope to be speaking five!” he added.
