Monza earned their initial Serie A triumph of the season, propelled by Gustavo Varela's two goals. Sassuolo fought back late but fell short.

Monza, under pressure after a slow start to the season, fielded a team without several key players due to injury. New loan signing Noel Tornqvist debuted in goal. Sassuolo, who had been in strong form, also had multiple players unavailable.

The home side began assertively. Debutant goalkeeper Noel Tornqvist was immediately tested, making crucial saves from close range against Domenico Berardi and later denying Darryl Bakola and Kristian Thorstvedt after a clever back-heel pass.

Patrick Cutrone had an opportunity after receiving a pass from Varela but was dispossessed before shooting. He later forced a save from the Sassuolo keeper with a low drive.

Monza took the lead from a corner. Goalkeeper Arijanet Muric fumbled a Varela header, allowing it to squirm over the line.

Sassuolo conceded again from another corner when Dany Mota Carvalho was fouled by Esposito, resulting in a penalty. Varela converted, completing his brace.

Vasilije Adzic's powerful free-kick found the top corner late in the game, giving Sassuolo a glimmer of hope. The goalkeeper's positioning was again questioned. In stoppage time, a Kieron Bowie header from an Adzic cross struck the far post, narrowly missing an equalizer.
