Montella: Unwavering on Team's Potential, Rejects Unjustified Criticism
Vincenzo Montella, ahead of Turkiye's Nations League fixture against Italy, stated he "does not want to think negatively." He also declared, "I cannot accept illogical criticism."
The match is scheduled for Monday at the Stadio Dall’Ara in Bologna, with kickoff at 19:45 UK time (20:45 CEST).
The Italian manager faces increasing pressure following a disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign. Turkiye has started their Nations League with three consecutive losses: 1-0 to France, 4-1 against Italy, and a 3-0 defeat away to Belgium. These results have fueled calls for his dismissal.
"We aim to win, compete, and challenge ourselves at this level," Montella commented during his press conference. "For the majority of the three matches, we had our opportunities, and the outcome remained uncertain for extended periods, with the exception of the Italy game. We are motivated and eager to achieve a positive result, as simply playing on equal terms is not enough."
Turkiye is missing key players, including Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz and Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, who are sidelined with injuries. Real Madrid talent Arda Guler is suspended after receiving a red card against Belgium, further thinning the squad.
"These are all important players for us, just as they are for their respective clubs. Nevertheless, this presents a good chance to showcase new talent and evaluate them," Montella added. "I am confident we will be competitive despite these absences and will strive to secure a victory."
Since taking charge in October 2023, Montella's record with Turkiye stands at 21 wins, five draws, and 13 losses. During his tenure, the team achieved promotion to Nations League A and qualified for their first World Cup in 24 years.
"I am familiar with the dynamics of football and accept them," the coach noted. "What I find unacceptable is illogical criticism. Constructive feedback, however, I can appreciate. This is the first time in Turkiye's history that we are in Nations League A, and I am the sole coach to have guided us to this stage. We would like to participate in more competitive matches like the one against France or the second half against Italy, but we are struggling to find the back of the net. Against Belgium, we had 42 entries into their penalty area, and I questioned what else could be done."
"A few days ago, I was asked if I knew a striker who had scored nearly 100 goals in the Turkish third division. I later learned he was 32 years old. If it were someone we could develop for the future, I would have considered him. However, this kind of baseless criticism is hurtful. I understand the disappointment after the early World Cup exit, but our top players were not in optimal condition entering the tournament. While this is one perspective, football always offers new objectives and opportunities. We must learn from that elimination and move forward."
Returning to Italian soil and facing his former Sampdoria teammate Roberto Mancini on the opposing bench holds significance for Montella. When asked if he anticipated this might be his final game as Turkiye coach, he responded, "I am determined, motivated, and a professional who always gives his all with passion and a pure heart. This is my mindset, even though I am fully aware of football's unpredictable nature. I refuse to entertain negative thoughts."
