Luka Modric believes Rafael Leao is mature enough to make his own career decisions, but emphasized that the Portuguese international is among the world's elite when performing at his best, stating, "Of course I want Rafa in my team."

At the close of the 2025-26 season, Leao had expressed his desire to depart AC Milan after seven years in pursuit of a new challenge, ideally in the Premier League or La Liga.

However, as of now, Leao has not received any offers he finds compelling. Recent reports from Italy have begun to raise the possibility that he might extend his stay at San Siro for another season.

Modric shared his thoughts on the situation in an extensive interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, published on Wednesday.

Modric's comments on Leao: ‘One of the best in the world at his peak’

There had been uncertainty regarding Modric's own future with Milan for the 2026-27 season. The 40-year-old, whose contract was expiring, has since signed a one-year extension, despite the club not qualifying for the Champions League next term.

When asked if he had any advice for Leao in his current predicament, Modric responded: "No, I don't want to give him advice.

"Rafa is mature enough to know what's best for him. He knows how much the fans and the club love him. He's a great player and it's wonderful to have him here. He just needs to work hard and give his all for Milan, as he always has."

"Perhaps he hasn't had his best season; he's dealt with a few injuries and hasn't felt at his physical peak, but he remains an exceptional footballer. In my opinion, if he were to stay, it would be fantastic for all of us because he is one of the best in the world when he is at his best.

"I hope he does well, rediscovers his form, and helps us have a great year, because as I've said, he is a great player. I would love for him to stay, but we will see what happens. As I mentioned, he and the club will decide what the best solution is, but as a fellow footballer, of course I want Rafa on my team."
