Milan 3-2 Torino – Allegri: ‘Fullkrug needs consistency, Pavlovic has improved a lot’
Massimiliano Allegri expressed significant relief and emotion after Milan's narrow 3-2 victory over Torino. This crucial win keeps the Rossoneri firmly in contention for the Serie A title, chasing Inter's top spot.
The importance of this triumph was amplified by recent defeats against Parma and Lazio, which had briefly jeopardized Milan's title aspirations at a critical juncture of the season.
During the intense match, Allegri was heard telling referee Doveri he would quit football, a comment he later addressed with his signature humor in a post-match interview.
“It was the heat of the moment,” he chuckled. “I'm getting older, and I wouldn't want my heart to give out. That match was incredibly important for us at that point.”
The first half proved challenging, with Torino posing considerable threats in the initial 30 minutes.
Allegri admitted, “We were forcing play too much centrally and conceding too many counter-attacks.” He added, “In the second half, the players also improved physically, which wasn't easy after they equalized just before halftime.”
Discussing tactics, Allegri elaborated on Alexis Saelemaekers' demanding role within his 4-3-3 formation.
“He is our balancing player; when we defend, he acts as the fifth midfielder, and when we attack, he becomes the third forward. Sometimes he's quite exhausted by the end of games.” The introduction of Pulisic on the wing helped unlock a Torino side that had maintained a tight central defensive block.
Milan 3-2 Torino – Allegri Praises Pavlovic and Defends Fullkrug
Niklas Fullkrug's performance was also scrutinized, with Allegri defending the German striker while highlighting the broader challenge faced by players with inconsistent playing time.
“It's not easy when you lack continuity; your physical condition suffers,” he explained. “He had a difficult first half but a much-improved second. Contrast that with Ricci, whose physicality and mentality allow him to come on at any time and immediately be ready. Players are simply different.”
The coach emphasized that Fullkrug's second-half resurgence was precisely the response he had been looking for.
Regarding Strahinja Pavlovic's impressive display, crowned by a spectacular long-range goal, Allegri was full of accolades.
“He played a fantastic match tonight; he has improved significantly,” Allegri stated. “He possesses character and spirit, and he defended well in open play. He is developing remarkably, and I am delighted.”
With the international break approaching, Allegri seized the opportunity to playfully tease his forwards.
“This week, I'm not asking anything of anyone; the break is the only thing I asked them not to ruin for me. But the attackers will start scoring again in crucial moments after the pause.”
Following the break, Milan will face Napoli in a highly anticipated clash between second and third place, a match Allegri simply described as “a beautiful evening of football and sport.”
