Lazio's €19M Sponsorship Deal with Polymarket at Risk Amidst Italian Ban
Lazio is at risk of losing a significant €19 million sponsorship deal as Polymarket, the platform involved, faces an impending ban in Italy. The Italian authorities have deemed Polymarket to be operating an illegal gambling service, jeopardizing the agreement signed in April.
The Serie A club has faced challenges in securing major shirt sponsors in recent years. The deal with Polymarket was set to span two seasons, with an additional option for the 2028-29 season, but its commencement is now uncertain.
Lazio's Sponsorship Challenges
Polymarket has been added to the list of blocked websites by Italy's Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM). The platform is not licensed to provide public gambling services within Italy.
This situation follows a legal dispute from the previous year, where Polymarket argued it operated as a prediction market rather than a conventional betting site, facilitating exchanges of odds among users.
Although Polymarket initially continued operations during an appeal process, Italian authorities have re-imposed a block in the last 24 hours.
The repercussions extend beyond Lazio, as Polymarket also has a multi-year agreement with Lega Serie A for the United States market. This partnership involves the use of official Serie A logos and trademarks on their American platform.
