Italy, what’s next? Six to build on, possible returns and inevitable exits

Following another disappointing World Cup play-off elimination, Italy faces yet another period of rebuilding. The sports newspaper Gazzetta has identified key players expected to remain in the squad, those who might return, and others whose national team careers are likely nearing their end.

The position of Italy's national team coach, Gennaro Gattuso, remains uncertain, despite FIGC President Gabriele Gravina's request for him and Delegation Chief Gigi Buffon to continue after the team's latest dramatic World Cup play-off exit. According to Gazzetta, regardless of who coaches the team, six players are considered foundational for the future: Captain Gigio Donnarumma, Marco Palestra, Moise Kean, Francesco Pio Esposito, Riccardo Calafiori, and Sandro Tonali.

Gazzetta also mentions Gianluca Scamacca, 27, but his inclusion is debated due to his history of numerous injuries in recent years and only one goal in 22 appearances for the Azzurri. Mateo Retegui, after months in the Saudi Pro League, has struggled to maintain his best form and is reportedly seeking a return to Serie A, with Milan and Juventus rumored to be interested.

Players like Napoli winger Matteo Politano, who started both play-off matches, are unlikely to be central to Italy's long-term plans as he approaches his 33rd birthday in August. Leonardo Spinazzola and Bryan Cristante are in a similar situation regarding their future key roles.

Despite recent underwhelming international displays, Gazzetta suggests that Inter Milan stars Nicolò Barella, Alessandro Bastoni, and Federico Dimarco will likely remain crucial for Italy in the short term, even though they will all be over 30 by the 2030 World Cup.

Several young talents are developing well at club level, including Davide Bartesaghi, Michael Kayode, and Cher Ndour. Francesco Camarda, an 18-year-old prospect, saw his progress slowed by a shoulder injury during his loan spell at Lecce this season.

Other players such as Daniel Maldini, Mattia Zaccagni, Federico Chiesa, Nicolò Zaniolo, Matteo Gabbia, Samuele Ricci, and Nicolò Fagioli could also be considered for future national team selections. These decisions will likely hinge on the coaching situation, whether Gennaro Gattuso remains in charge or a new manager is appointed.
