Gattuso Reflects on Italy's Tough Win, Confident for World Cup Play-off Final

Gennaro Gattuso acknowledged that Italy's 2-0 win against Northern Ireland in the World Cup play-off semi-final was a hard-fought battle, but affirmed that the team is now united and ready for the final match.

The tension was palpable leading into the semi-final held in Bergamo, intensifying with each passing minute as a decisive goal remained elusive.

Sandro Tonali eventually broke the deadlock, scoring Italy's opening goal against Northern Ireland with a precise low shot from outside the box. Shortly after, his setup led to Moise Kean converting the second goal, slotting it into the far bottom corner to make it 2-0.

Gattuso Expresses Relief Following Italy's Victory

Speaking to RAI Sport, Gattuso commented, “It was genuinely a struggle; far from easy. They even caught us off guard with their vertical passes, and we certainly could have performed better.”

He continued, “While there was focus, Locatelli dropped too deep, and our build-up play wasn't executed as planned. However, we performed commendably, and that shouldn't be overlooked.”

“Our pace was too sluggish, and Locatelli found himself pushed back. Nevertheless, we circulated the ball with greater urgency after half-time, and now our focus shifts to the final,” Gattuso added. “It's a demanding task; we anticipated this match would be tough, so now we need to rest and recuperate.”

The Azzurri have only completed the first stage of their journey, as they are set to compete against either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-off final. This crucial match will take place in Cardiff on Tuesday, March 31.

The other semi-final saw a thrilling contest extend into extra time after Edin Dzeko equalized Daniel James's initial goal.

Gattuso remarked, “The pressure we experience is mirrored by our opponents. Naturally, both potential adversaries are distinct teams, and varying match environments await us. However, for now, we want to savor this achievement.”
