Gasperini: Roma's Squad Needs Reinforcements, Four Key Signings Requested
Gian Piero Gasperini voiced his displeasure after AS Roma's 4-1 friendly loss to Cardiff City, stating, "It's evident this squad requires completion. I requested a defender, a winger, and two strikers."
The Giallorossi have faced challenges during their pre-season campaign, including squandering a 3-0 lead in a draw with Cannes, and subsequently suffering a significant defeat against Cardiff City.
"I believe we encountered difficulties in certain areas, particularly in defense during the first half, conceding goals from unusual deflections," Gasperini commented to Tuttomercatoweb. "While there were positive aspects, such inattention, inadequate fitness levels, and a lack of focus inevitably lead to such outcomes."
Despite Roma securing Champions League qualification, which typically offers a slightly increased budget, the club has yet to secure several high-profile transfer targets. The coach, having been frustrated by a lack of reinforcements last summer, is determined to prevent a recurrence.
Gasperini Demands Roma Reinforcements
"The transfer market has truly picked up pace due to the World Cup, but I certainly anticipate movement from here on," Gasperini added. "We've seen a number of players depart, and it's clear that this squad needs to be bolstered. We will undoubtedly need to bring in new players to create a competitive team. Currently, we have three midfielders sidelined, some players have only just arrived, and others are not yet match-fit."
A notable signing for Roma has been Santiago Castro, acquired from Bologna for €35 million plus add-ons, who was immediately included in the starting lineup. "He is undoubtedly a good acquisition; these are the types of players who elevate a team. Essentially, Castro is a centre-forward, as is Donyell Malen, but there are scenarios where they could play together. We have a packed schedule and will require squad rotation. Castro was determined to join Roma at all costs, making him a positive signing."
When asked about his specific requests to the Roma directors prior to pre-season, Gasperini stated, "Compared to last season, I asked for a defender, a winger, and two strikers. Naturally, if a player leaves, they must be replaced. This was my objective, and it doesn't strike me as particularly difficult or unachievable. We are also actively seeking quality players, akin to Castro."
Roma has also recently agreed to a deal worth €16.5 million plus add-ons with Wolfsburg for Greek defender Konstantino Koulierakis, who arrived at the airport this afternoon. "We have this young player who can solidify our defense, as it was a necessity; we only had five players in that department. Having at least two players for each position is crucial for any team competing in cup competitions," warned Gasperini. "Anyone who fails to address this will pay a heavy price."
