Freuler: ‘I know how Gasperini plays by heart’ after 254 games together
Remo Freuler might prove to be a crucial asset for Bologna in their upcoming Europa League clash, asserting, "I know Gian Piero Gasperini's style of play inside out."
The initial leg of this Round of 16 encounter is scheduled for Thursday at the Stadio Dall’Ara. While the original text indicates a match against Roma, it's important to note that Gian Piero Gasperini is the coach of Atalanta.
Given this is an all-Italian UEFA derby, it's unlikely either team holds many major surprises for the other, though certain individuals possess an even deeper insight into particular tactical approaches.
Gasperini and Freuler are old friends
Freuler played 254 matches under Gasperini during their time together at Atalanta from 2016 to 2022, contributing 20 goals and 23 assists.
"I know Gasperini's playing style intimately, even though he has introduced some modifications to his approach in recent years," Freuler shared with Sky Sport Italia. "The fundamental principles remain largely consistent, and I look forward to seeing him again tomorrow."
Gasperini typically defers several tactical decisions until the last moment. Currently, he often employs two players in the trequartista role, positioned behind a central forward, a strategy often necessitated by numerous attacking injuries in his squad.
"I am also familiar with the adjustments he implements, whether he opts for three forwards or an additional midfielder; I understand his tactical considerations," Freuler added. "We will see how things unfold."
Freuler departed Atalanta in 2022 for Nottingham Forest but made his return to Serie A within a year, now revitalized and thriving with Bologna.
He had already departed by the time Atalanta achieved their significant European successes, but he did experience some memorable European moments during his tenure.
"I recall our celebrations after the match against Shakhtar Donetsk, when we clinched qualification for the Champions League Round of 16. That joy still resonates with me, as does the excellent camaraderie we shared both on and off the pitch," stated the Switzerland international.
"Securing a strong result in the first leg is always vital for approaching the decider with confidence. We are determined to advance further in the Europa League. Regrettably, the draw paired us with Roma, who, with all due respect to the other teams, present a tougher challenge than, for instance, KRC Genk."
